My name is Luke Loving, and I’m a senior at West High School. I am a new writer on the Beak ‘n’ Eye staff this year. I enjoy English classes as well as math classes. I am on the tennis team, and I like to play basketball for fun. I am also a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. I want to learn more about the process behind making a newspaper and be more involved with the school. I think being on the newspaper staff will improve my writing, while also being something new and fun to try.

Passing time can be hazardous with the risk of COVID-19. Principal Williams has made it a point of interest to keep the students as safe as possible throughout the day. “With the COVID, I wanted to limit that extra movement. We’re already back, it’s already kind of new, and then you throw in an advisory, that’s a whole brand new group of kids that you have to worry about contact tracing,” Williams said.

Arnold wasn’t always sure about what he wanted to be growing up. He wanted to be a teacher, but did not originally plan on becoming a science teacher. “Early on I thought I wanted to [be a teacher]. I wanted to be a history teacher actually when I was in my early twenties, but I just was a little misguided,” Arnold said.

Erwin shares some qualities with his older brother, Brett Erwin, who graduated from West in 2018. They both played basketball all four years of high school. “They’re both hard working. They were obviously raised really well so they’re both great kids. I think Derek is a little more outgoing towards everyone else,” Paulson said.

Talk about a game face. Boys swimmer Nate Hagedorn '23 uses the breaststroke technique during a home swim meet vs. Muscatine. Hagedorn swam multiple races at the swim meet versus Muscatine. "I like that [breaststroke] is more challenging than freestyle. It gives me more to do and it's a fun stroke," Hagedorn said.
