West makes a differences by dedicating a football game theme to help raise money for hurricane victims in Texas by dressing in there state flag colors. Students ran up and down the bleachers collecting money for the victims.

Davenport West and Central joined forces to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas at the Sept. 1 football game against Davenport Central’s Blue Devils. West raised $927.16 and Central raised $210. The money will go to the American Red Cross.

During halftime, time was devoted to recognize former football coaches. The Ring of Honor acknowledged three former West coaches: Hall of Fame head boys’ basketball coach Dave Wessel, Hall of Fame head football coach Roger Harrington and longtime Hall of Fame coach of multiple sports and P.E. teacher Ruth Johnson. Plaques will be put up at Brady Street Stadium.

West also honored the 1977 Iowa Class 4A state title-winning football team.

“It was one of the biggest thrills of of my life as a coach; I was fortunate that I won two state championships in my year,” assistant coach of the 1977 Davenport West varsity championship football team Bob Potter said.

The 1977 championship team supports their alma mater.

“Oh it was great. Well we try to come back and encourage the kids, but we want them to see the pride that we had. This is our school. This will always be my school no matter where I go,” former quarterback of the 1977 championship team Todd Rubley said.
