Mary Wheeler has been a long-term sub at West for two years and is working on staying full-time. Wheeler has subbed for 5 years at various different places and has been in the Davenport School District for 3 years.
“I live in Muscatine, and so I long-term subbed for 2 years in Muscatine. I was at Smart one year as the librarian because I had a vacancy there; and this is my second year at West,” said Wheeler.
While Wheeler is long-term subbing she is also working on getting her license to work her position full-time.
“I really like it. The staff is super great, I haven’t met anybody that I didn’t like. The staff is super great. The kids in this department, they’re great. I really like it. I was really hoping to be able to come back here this year, and it just worked out that the position was still vacant,” Wheeler said.
If you see her in the hallway or classroom make sure to ask what book she’s reading because she’s always reading something. Wheeler’s favorite genre is all kinds of fantasy books.
“Kids laugh at me all the time that I was always reading something. And like never not reading something. A couple of the seniors that graduated were like, what are you reading now? What are you reading now? Like I’m always reading something. I am a fantasy girl, so I read all sorts of fantasy books, things with dragons and stuff like that. I’m a big fan of that,” Wheeler said.
