There have been many people who have donated organs, including one of the West gym teachers, Mrs. Gillund. But have you ever wondered how you can become an organ donor? According to OrganDonor.gov, about 60% of Americans are organ donors, while about 90% of Americans support organ donation. Being an organ donor is as simple as signing up when you get your driver’s license or permit. One common misconception about organ donation is that your organs will be taken before you pass away. It is also thought that hospitals don’t help you if you’re an organ donor. While in some cases you may donate an organ before you pass, this is only done with your consent. It is also illegal for doctors to deny you treatment no matter what the situation is.
According to a survey sent out to students and staff in which 82 responded, 50.6% of students and staff are not organ donors, meaning 49.4% of people who responded are organ donors. Organ donors are a very important aspect of helping those in need. The way organ donation works is when you pass away, they will salvage your healthy organs and give them to somebody, to hopefully help them become healthy again..
“I am an organ donor because I believe that it will help somebody else when I pass on. If I were in a fatal accident but my organs were still usable then they could go to someone in need to help them live a happy life. I understand that many personal and religious beliefs may cause people to look the other way on organ donation but I believe that if these beliefs are not holding you back then it is a wonderful idea to be an organ donor,“ senior Adrian Evans said
As Adrian said organ donation could save somebody in need. If you are killed in a fatal accident some of your organs may still be usable. It may seem dark and morbid but it can really help somebody in need.
“I am an organ donor because I would love to be able to help someone else after I pass away. I believe that it is important to be an organ donor because your healthy organs can go to somebody who needs them to survive,” activities secretary Diane Paquet said.
Not everyone supports organ donation, but those who do, support it for a good cause. Organ donation can be one of the best ways to help someone get a second chance at life. According to Donate Life America, a person is added to the waiting list for an organ every 8 minutes and 12 people die a day waiting for a donor organ. Tissue from just one donated organ can help save up to 75 people, so become a donor and get a chance to save a life!
