On November 1st 2024, Davenport West hosted a PowderPuff game down at Brady Street Stadium. PowderPuff was a game created to help raise money for Student Senate’s Hunger Drive. Though only junior and senior girls were able to play in the game, any junior or senior boy could sign up either to coach or dance during halftime. In order to participate during the game and get a t-shirt, all students paid $20 which went to support the Hunger Drive in being able to provide food for other countries. Despite the cold weather, both teams played their best but ultimately the Seniors’ strive was much greater, leading to their victory.

“I made sure to let them know what they’re doing wrong and try to make them better as players,”…“Naturally most of the seniors are just pretty athletic people. Other than that, a lot of them came to practice, and we take it pretty seriously.” Senior Landon Pillard said.

Whether they were naturally athletic or not, it was important for the girls to still practice and prepare for the game. From learning different drills to memorizing plays, both teams put in the effort to ensure they played well and were confident when out on the field.

When asked how they prepared for the game, Junior Raelyn Lacourse said, “I got gloves for my friends and then we practiced all week.”

Being confident in what you’re doing and how you’re playing is a crucial part to executing your strategies throughout the game. Giving your players positive feedback when they do something good, is a great way to boost their confidence and get them more excited about the game.

“When the girls got touchdowns or when they caught the ball, I made sure I was there to hype them up and make sure that they played good.”…“Next year the Juniors are not going to beat us at all. We have a great group of girls and they know how to play football.” Junior Jordan Martin said.

The atmosphere of the game created so much excitement from everyone, including parents, players, coaches, and even the student section, who began chanting and clapping in support for the Juniors. Despite the ending of the game, everyone had a great time and made some fun memories.

“We were up 13-0, then they caught back up, and almost beat us. But they didn’t.”…“It was really fun. I felt like it was a really good, competitive way of donating to the hunger drive. I enjoyed all of it.” Senior Ashanti Kolwey said.

Even though the weather was cold, all of the girls were full of energy and ready to play. Both teams made numerous touchdowns and remarkable plays, with the final score being 35-26 and the seniors taking the win. Atmospheres both on and off the field were ecstatic and full of excitement. The game was a success and built new memories for both the juniors and graduating seniors, all while helping to earn money for the hunger drive.
